Methods » Magnetic
The magnetic method measures the earth's ambient magnetic field. The field strength becomes stronger near large magnetic objects. Therefore, buried magnetic objects can be located by mapping magnetic field values.
Because some earth materials are more magnetic than others, this method can also map geologic changes.
Magnetic susceptibility is the physical property that relates to the induced magnetism of a material when in the presence of a magnetic field.
The estimation of rock magnetism can be easily done by magnetic susceptibility measurements and is related to the contents in magnetic minerals (mainly magnetite and pyrrothite).
Detailed magnetic survey known as magnetometry is an effective and efficient geophysical survey technique used to define areas of past human activity by mapping spatial variations and contrast in the magnetic properties of soil, subsoil and bedrock.
